Who needs a President?
Neeraj Jain 25 July 2007
Till 2-3 days back, every news channel was debating whether the candidates for the current presidential election are as clean as Kalam or not. I would ask all these channels to forget that debate. Ideally, the topic for debate should be "Do we need a President?" What is the role of President in government functioning? With due respect, I want to say that he does nothing. He is just a rubber stamp; nothing more than that. He gets the highest salary as a government servant. He moves around the city in the most expensive Mercedes. Millions of rupees are spent on maintaining his security and maintaining his palatial palace (Rashtrapati Bhawan). You can guess by visiting Mughal Garden that how much money is spent on many gardens that the President is having. I ask, what for? Why are we wasting the taxpayer"s money. Some of you might argue that presidents have reversed the decisions of government in the past. But how many times? Just 1-3 times in the complete tenure; that"s it. I think we ape everything without going through its merits and demerits. We just decided the follow the British model where there is a queen and a prime minister. We were wrong on that. Why don"t follow the American model where there is all powerful President and no high-salaried rubber stamp?
I would like to hear your comments on this. Just read my entry completely and then post your comments.
Cheers!!!
PS: A fake image of Presidential palace has been used intentionally.
